Snowballs

Susie was the prettiest fifth grader in Detroit. All the boys liked her. All the girls envied her. Joey was going to talk with her. No small feat. He had tried a couple of times in the past, but something always went wrong. His friends would yell him, or she was with someone. Joey saw Susie walking on the other side of the street just slightly ahead of him. He checked for traffic and shot across the road. "Hi Susie", "Hi". "Great snowball snow huh?" " I suppose," said Susie with a smile. Joey reached down and made a perfect snowball, "don't hit me", Susie said. "Nah, don’t' worry". Joey looked down the street; I bet I can hit that stop sign. "It's a long way off,” said Susie. "I was on the baseball team, I played outfield, watch this. Joey took aim and sailed a perfect arch toward the sign. He felt pride on his good throw and figured it would impress Susie. From a distance he could hear the song Daydream Believer by The Monkees playing from a car radio. His cheeks felt rosy and cold. The snowball started it decent straight at the stop sign. What a throw. It cleared the sign and hit the cheek of Susie's little brother. He started to cry; Susie looked at Joey and said, "you're mean". Joey's heart sank. He was a nice person.
