About Everyone Wants A Box

All songs recorded in my attic in Guilford CT circa 1987-88. The attic was really hot but it was my own space to work on music. The house did not have a basement. I lived a couple doors down from Art Carney the actor, and had private beach access to Long Island Sound.

I just had a new baby boy named Jesse. Being a new Dad was daunting and it seemed like my previous musician life was over. I think I spent most of that year listening to a local punk radio station in New Haven, and remember listening to the post punk, early alternative, quite a bit. I usta bring Jesse in a baby carrier down to a neighborhood basketball court and shoot hoops by myself, blasting Metallica. Connecticut was a beautiful state to live in. Day trips into New Haven and walking around the Yale campus was fun.

It was my first attempt at recording songs. I would use 2 single-track cassette players, start the first one and play drum and guitar, then start another cassette player to overdub, and then repeat that process a few times. I recall spending plenty of my discretionary money on cassettes. They were rather expensive high quality cassettes. Thirty years later the cassettes still work, but quite abit of the music is cringeworthy. The songs on this album were the ones that I liked the best. I have a few others that need work that I may get to someday.

The idea of playing in a band seemed out of the question. For my job, I was travelling across New York State every other week, all the way to Buffalo and back, then into New York City or Boston the other weeks. Getting a business career off the ground. NY Punk was done for the most part, and there seemed to be a bit of a void in music. While driving down the highway I would either listen to the cassettes I made, or sales motivation tapes.
